TG Android Client v1.1.35

Question

== Release v1.1.35, 2018-04-16

* Change some URLs from HTTP to HTTPS

* Android's Power saving mode is handled (Android 6 and above).
In case that Power saving mode from Android is turned on,
TorGuard is not working as intended.
Thus, the user gets a notification if power saving mode is on.
Additionally, the user gets a description on how to exclude
TorGuard from that mode.

* User can choose Nameserver when VPN is connected.
The option can be found in Settings > Network > Nameservers
 Selectable are:
 - VPN DNS
 - Google
 - Level 3
 - OpenDNS
 - Ad Blocking DNS
 - Custom (Name, DNS1, DNS2)

* Show "Verified" link
When VPN is connected, the current IP was shown under the label "Connected"
Now, if the IP is correct (equal to the server IP), a "Verified" link will appear.
The link points to a website where the user can check the working connection.

Thanks for this update, is definitely appreciated. I was wondering if you plan to "refresh" the app; in particular the UI is outdated by Android design standards.

Thanks

It is certainly on our minds yes for all our apps - we now have a guy who does such designs and we are looking to see what we can come up with.

Thank you for finally adding ad-blocking guys! It's working pretty fine. Thank you for your hard work.

The "disconnect when screen off" option is probably not working as intended(battery saver?); as it certainly disconnects me when screen turns off but doesn't reconnect back when the screen is turned on. But I reported this to support too so fingers crossed for a battery saver option!

Also another feature request: please add the "always-on VPN" feature.

Thanks TG!

Marco - thanks for the feedback - yes the next release will have the VPN reconnect if the screen goes off, it is already done in the next release :)

We also have Always-On on our dev list and will look into that option for our next release also.

It is currently already released to the Play Store - there may be a delay in certain regions though but it should push to all regions soon.

Is there any benefit to using GCM ciphers vs CBC on mobile devices? Does TG plan to adopt the use of GCM ciphers in their mobile app?

We want speed not looks so don't make any changes if it will affect the speed/loading/clicks of the apps.

A UI refresh is certainly not a bad idea. But personally I'm content with how TG is right now look wise, it's certainly not ugly and works pretty darn well.

I just hope TG doesn't take the UI refresh demand too seriously and prioritise that over features that actually affect TG's functionality (battery saver, always-on VPN etc.).

It won't be an overhaul just a general improvement at first :)

Security, speed and functionality are most important to us.

Could you also please add the port/auth (e.g. 1912 (SHA256) to the android app like in the windows app?

This will help identify which ports work on which networks.

Certainly, this is already coming in our next release :)

Hi TG,

If possible please add cosmetic filtering to strengthen adblocking. Also TorGuard Android client's adblocking works relatively fine except that it doesn't block Google ads in search pages and YouTube ads.

So, Youtube ads are not showing up for now. If it does I'll post an update. But I'm still seeing Google sponsored ads in search pages. Both these tests are on my Android device.

One thing I noticed on my Windows 10 laptop while browsing on Chrome+Ublock Origin that might help you guys is that if I disable cosmetic filtering in Ublock Origin then Google ads get displayed in search pages.

Update: Haven't encountered any ad in YouTube on Android yet, but checked the desktop client of TorGuard with Chrome's incognito mode(with all my extensions disabled) and encountered ads in YouTube. The desktop client is using ad-blocking DNS too(104.223.91.194, 104.223.91.210).

Hi Marco, those DNS you are using in Tg Client are no longer Ad Blocking DNS - please go to more settings --> network tab --> Set "When VPN is connected" to the Ad Block DNS.

Hi @Support,

I've uploaded a video recording the desktop client, please have a look here. I'm using the adblocking DNS nameserver option in both the desktop and android clients. And in both cases(desktop and android) my DNS address points to (104.223.91.194, 104.223.91.210).

Marco, if that DNS are overriding whats set here, do you have them set on the interface itself or on your router/modem?

I don't have any router/modem. I simply do usb tethering with my Android device to browse in my Windows 10 laptop. Only thing I've set myself is the system dns via the TG client to use Adguard dns(I've included a picture), but that shouldn't matter when using TG VPN right?

Also, I haven't done anything in Android. In settings, I've choosen adblocking dns whose IPs are shown in nameserver setting as 35.170.152.112, 34.228.48.172. Are these the correct IPs? But they don't show up when I connect to VPN and check online.

You must have this DNS set on your Android device, maybe in the TG Android app? this DNS may be overriding what you have set on your desktop.

Hi @Support,

I don't think that's the case because when I choose the VPN DNS and Google DNS the results are different. I've recorded two videos of TG running both on my Windows 10 laptop and Android device. Please have a look.

Also, I don't know how to set a particular DNS to override something else and I don't see any such setting in TG client. My Android device, Lenovo K8 Note, is fully stock, no root and have a locked bootloader.

I beg your pardon - our Ad Block DNS use this DNS for forwarding which is why you see those 2 DNS addresses.

Okay thanks for clarifying that, I was getting worried🤭. So my original request still stands, I'm still seeing Google and YouTube ads and ugly ads' placeholders because no cosmetic filtering. Please look into it at your convenience.
