WireGuard is Here!
The VPN industry is constantly evolving, and TorGuard’s dev team is committed to keeping you on the cutting edge. No, we’re not sending you a floppy disk update in the mail, but we are giving everyone a massive speed boost. In this latest update, users can increase VPN performance with a new protocol option known as WireGuard. This new TorGuard update is now available in-app for all Windows, macOS, and Linux users. Android and iOS apps will also feature WireGuard support in the coming weeks.
What is WireGuard?
WireGuard is a brand-new open-source VPN protocol built on a lightweight codebase that utilizes modern cryptographic methods. Just like its predecessors, PPTP/IPSEC Wireguard runs inside the kernel, but unlike these outdated VPN protocols, Wireguard does not sacrifice security for performance. So, what do you get when you combine low overhead with cutting edge cryptography? You get maximum VPN performance on any device and on any network. It does not matter if you are on 4G or Fiber, connecting from a small netbook or an intel powered desktop – Wireguard will provide you with the fastest possible VPN speeds for that device and internet connection.
How Secure is WireGuard?
TorGuard has already been offering WireGuard in a limited capacity over the past year while testing the integration of this new protocol in our existing VPN infrastructure. TorGuard’s WireGuard implementation uses encryption cipher ChaCha20 and Poly1305 for authentication, both of which are on the leading edge of cryptography and highly secure. We have also modified our WireGuard server authentication to align with TorGuard’s privacy policy, so no user IP address is ever logged or stored server-side. This was especially important to us as it does not come standard with a default WireGuard server installation. TorGuard’s hardened WireGuard VPN setup is now available network-wide across all TorGuard VPN servers in 50+ countries.
How do I use WireGuard?
To access the latest TorGuard app featuring WireGuard simply click the update banner at the bottom of the TorGuard app or visit our downloads page to grab the latest copy. After the install opens the TorGuard app, under tunnel-type chose “WireGuard”. You will now be able to connect to any server through this new protocol.
Our team is extremely excited to bring WireGuard VPN into the TorGuard VPN lineup. We will continue to offer OpenVPN as the default connection and will by no means abandon development of established VPN tunnel options like OpenVPN, OpenConnect, and SSTP. WireGuard is simply another privacy tool we are proud to offer in the TorGuard VPN toolbox and we look forward to receiving valuable feedback from you, the customer.
