Between Turkey & China, it was a bad weekend for Censorship
Censorship continues as strong as ever in countries like China and Turkey. It seems like every weekend there’s some event that causes officials to enforce censorship, or a new app released that needs to be censored to align itself with China’s strict goals and policies. Everyday VPN technology and it’s ability to bypass censorship proves to be more vital.
Another terror attack in Turkey means another country-wide censorship. A statement by RTÜK released explaining that “The Turkish Prime Minister has imposed a temporary broadcast ban regarding the terror attack conducted in Ankara this morning.” Government spokespeople claim that they are censoring content on major media outlets to prevent gruesome and bloody images from being showed that create panic. If media organizations didn’t comply with officials, full blackouts would occur.
The event causing these blackouts was a peace demonstration in which men and women held hands and danced. Soon after, explosions started killing over 86 people and wounding 186.
This terror attack imposed major outages both on Twitter and websites like Facebook where people correspond about events happening in the world. While the events are unsettling, the restriction imposed upon people–which effectively takes away their choice and freedom of speech is equally as concerning.
The British government is only one such party raising concerns about the state of censorship in Turkey, as many are concerned how blocks are treated as long as journalists who decide to speak out on such issues. One such Turkish journalist is being prosecuted for “insulting” the president.
Many Turkish citizens are outraged at the country’s response to the bombings. It might very well be the worst terror attack in Turkey’s history, but people are left in the dark in blackouts without knowing what is going on. Ironically since the Turkish government claims its hiding images of the attack, blackouts are serving to instill fear in citizens since they have no platform or ability, or even freedom, to participate in discourse.
This isn’t the first time Turkey has had censorship problems either. In April, this year sites like Twitter and YouTube were blocked to prevent information about a hostage situation leaking out. These censorship proceedings have resulted in Turkey being ranked 149th out of 180 in the Reporters Without Borders Press Freedom Index.
While Turkey is struggling with country wide events and their impact, or lack thereof on media, censorship in China is still in full throttle. Recently this last weekend Apple News deactivated their new Apple News app since China officials wanted to enforce sensors within the app. Compared to Turkey, China is near the bottom of the censorship list, with huge websites and applications simply not available at any time.
Apple, Twitter, and Facebook aren’t the only company facing difficulties in censored countries like Turkey and China. Google left China in 2010 after censorship restrictions and now is find a way back into the gigantic market in order to maximize their revenue.
Will big tech companies originating from the Silicon Valley give into governments to increase their profits? Is it really surprising that they might? After all, the censored parts of the world don’t need their services per se. This is what makes alternative solutions like VPN so important. It gives power to the digital consumer instead of the company or country.
